For Museums at Night 2012, hundreds of museums, galleries, libraries, archives and heritage sites will unlock their doors for special evening events over the weekend.

Roman Baths
Roman Sensations

Saturday 19th  May 8:15pm - 11pm (last entry 10pm) Enjoy a torch-lit evening of Roman music, drama and wine tasting organised by Heritage students from Bath Spa University. As darkness falls, the ruins of this vast Roman complex take on a unique atmosphere. By the light of flickering torches, you can walk on 2,000 year old pavements in the footsteps of the ancients. With its steaming waters and Roman artefacts, the Roman Baths is a truly magical place to visit at nightfall.

Free entry to Discovery Card holders, otherwise normal

Bath Postal Museum
Mail Coach by Lamp Light

Friday 18th and Saturday 19th May 11am - 10pm

Come and experience the golden days of the coaching era. Meet the coach guard in his red attire and post horn. View the clothes worn by the travellers and appreciate the limited light or torchlight, which the coachman had to see with. Just how far can you see in the dark?

Bath by Moonlight Walking Tour

Friday 18th May 8.30pm

This special one-off tour will reveal the impressive sights of Bath at night including the Abbey; Pulteney Bridge and several of Bath’s architectural masterpieces. Departing from outside the Pump Room, this special free two hour guided walking tour will be delivered by the well informed Mayor’s Guides.

 

Museum of East Asian Art
Death and the
Chinese Afterlife

Friday 18th May 6.30pm - 7.15pm

Join this exciting tour with our Curator and discover the art and

beliefs behind ancient Chinese burial customs.

Music for a Summer’s Evening

Saturday 19th May 6pm - 8pm

Picture 18th Century ladies discussing their evening at the Assembly Rooms whilst you wander the house and hear its stories, accompanied by Soprano Alicia Carroll, who sings regularly with the English Concert, and Lute player Bill Badley who trained at the Royal College of Music. 1940s Night at the Building of Bath Collection

Saturday 19th May 7pm – 10pm

Enjoy a taste of the 1940s, with an evening of music to accompany our

exhibition, Repairing War Torn Bath. View collections from the Bath

Preservation Trust archives, with tours at 8pm, 8.40pm and 9.20pm on a

first come first served basis. Chocolate awarded to visitors in 1940s dress!

Museum of Bath at Work
The Nero Affair and The Ha’Penny Bridge Disaster

Saturday 19th May 5pm - 9pm

See two specially commissioned plays performed by the Ha’Penny

Theatre Company. The Nero Affair is concerned with the mysterious death of Victorian businessman, J.B Bowler’s dog

– Nero. Accident or murder? Starts 6pm.

The Ha’penny Bridge Disaster tells the tale of the collapse of the Ha’Penny Footbridge in Widcombe, as a Victorian Melodrama.

Starts 8.15pm

Admission is free. Tickets for the play £4.00.

Learn about the use of symbolism and imagery in communicating identity, from the mediaeval seal of Glastonbury, to the branding of Harbutt’s Plasticine - which William Harbutt invented in Bath
